Discovery of archaeological inscriptions in the ancient city of Ghadames
As part of the training program and field study in the field of archaeological research, the Department of Antiquities at the Faculty of Science and Arts – Ghadames, Nalut University, conducted a field training activity this morning, Sunday, April 20, 2025, with the support of the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Hamoud Bashir Hamoud, and under the supervision of Professor Nour al-Din Al-Thani.
The training included a visit to five archaeological sites within the old city, and the team focused on inscriptions written on the ceilings using Moroccan script, and inscriptions on the mihrabs in Kufic script, dating back to one of the ancient mosques. These inscriptions are currently undergoing a scientific study for the first time, with results to be announced after the completion of documentation and analysis work.
The team also visited an archaeological site that highlights the stratigraphic sequence of artifacts, providing an opportunity to understand the development of settlement in the area. The activity concluded with a visit to the Sidi Younes Mosque, where the architectural elements and materials used in its construction were examined, in addition to accurately determining the direction of the Qibla.
